Public awareness held at Longmai

Handicapped Development Foundation Manipur (HD Foundation) in association with Domini English School, Longmai-3 organised a 'one-day public awareness cum distribution of aids and appliances' in connection with the 133rd birth anniversary of Hellen Keller at the school premises today.
Highlighting the importance of the observance, Dr Sapam Jasowanta Singh, Secretary General of the Foundation said in his key note address that such observance will motivate people with disability to come forward to live independently with dignity in the mainstream society.
There are 800 disabled persons in Tamenglong district.
But only one of them is availing unemployment allowances for disabled, Jasowanta pointed out.
The programme was graced by Meidon Gangmei, Chairman of Longmai Village Authority as guest, Kenen Kamei, Chairman of Longmai Area Village Council as chief guest and Dr Ch Rupachandra Singh, Chairman of HD Foundation as president.
During the programme, Pukhrambam Julia Devi, who secured fourth position in the Higher Secondary Exam-2013 and Khwairakpam Budhinanda Singh, who won gold medal in the 68Kg category of the 5th IBSA National Power Lifting Championship held at New Delhi were also felicitated.
The Foundation presented Julia the first payment of the merit scholarship which she will be getting as long as she continues her studies, while Budhinanda was presented a track-suit and letter of appreciation.
Fourteen wheelchairs; three hearing aids and two white canes were also distributed among other differently abled persons on the occasion.
