Imphal, June 27 2013:
After the districts hospitals and JNIMS have been brought under the ambit of Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), the same facility would be available in RIMS too shortly .
The JSSK was launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in June 2011 with the primary objective of reducing infant mortality rate, death of mothers during child delivery and also to encourage child delivery at hospitals as far as possible.
One official of Family Welfare Department told The Sangai Express that certain benefits have been given infants delivered at RIMS under JSSK but no such benefits could be extended to mothers so far.
Due to the huge number of child delivery at RIMS, introduction of JSSK in RIMS would require three/four additional staff.
Saying that efforts are on recruit the requisite staff, the official informed that mothers may avail benefits of JSSK once the required staff are recruited.
Some of the salient features of JSSK are; all medical bills incurred during child delivery either through caesarian section or otherwise would be borne by the Government and all expenditures incurred in conducting laboratory tests ahead of child delivery would be paid the Government.
Moreover, JSSK would pay transport charge for the expecting mothers to come to hospitals and it would provide seven days' or three days' food requirement during their stay in hospitals depending on whether the child delivery is done through caesarian section or normal procedure.
Further, drugs for both the infant as well as the mother would be provided free of cost under JSSK.
The same programme has been already implemented in JNIMS and all the district hospitals of Manipur.
Even though the programme guarantees laboratory investigation charges, to and fro transport fares and food for expecting mothers during their stay at hospitals, drugs cannot be provided free of cost as of now.
Maximum efforts would invested to ensure that drugs are also provided free of cost, informed the official.
Till March 2013, more than 3000 mothers have availed benefits given under JSSK.
Of all the hospitals in Manipur, maximum number of child delivery in done in RIMS.
On the average, more than 10,000 women deliver children at RIMS in a year.
