Imphal, June 16 2022:
Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) has demanded the government to conduct re-survey of the disputed Indo-Myanmar border and resolve the issue at the earliest.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here on Thursday, ICHAM president Yuimi Horam recalled that representatives of the state government, ICHAM and government of Myanmar carried out inspection of the Indo- Myanmar border when dispute rose with regard to boundary of the two neighbouring countries in the Manipur sector in 2013 .
In 2015, there was also an issue with regard to location of sub-pillars in Kwatha Khunou.
Consequently, border pillar fencing activity was halted, he added.
Later, with the coming of BJP-led government, a team of Surveyor of India assessed the Indo Myanmar border in 2018 .
The team then informed that the survey could not be finalised in a day and further said that they will revisit again.
However, the survey could not continue due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Yuimi Horam contended that resuming border fencing work by BRTF without resolving the dispute is unfortunate.
However, the timely intervention by UCM for halting the fencing activity is a boon for the state.
While urging the government to resolve the Indo-Myanmar border issue for the sake of the state, he said that resurvey should be carried out at the earliest so as to resolve the issue.
He also urged CSOs to join hands and work together for solving the issue.
Satang village former chairman Leidong, who was also present during the press conference, called for resolving the disputed Indo-Myanmar border pillar no 81 to 78.The dispute has caused tremendous inconveniences of the villagers settling nearby, he said.
