June 18 committee urges public participation

As stage is set for the 21st The Great June Uprising Unity Day observance commemorating the sacrifice of 18 martyrs on June 18, 2001 while defending the territorial integrity of the state, observance committee of the tribute event has appealed to the people of the state both from hills and valley and from all communities to participate in paying respect to the martyrs.
Addressing a press meet at Kekrupat near Minuthong, Committee chairman Joychandra Konthoujam recalled how the public uprising took place on June 18, 2001 after the ceasefire agreement between Government of India and NSCN-IM, which is popularly known as Bangkok Agreement, was extended "without territorial limit" and how the martyrs laid down their lives to defend the territorial integrity of Manipur.
He said that floral tributes will be paid to the final resting place of the 18 martyrs at Kekrupat starting from Saturday 7 am followed by candle light memorial in the evening.
A pledge to stand for the unity, integrity and identity of Manipur will be taken during the main function at Kekrupat.
The committee is arranging around 2000 vehicles for transportation of participants from different parts of the state, he said while urging for full participation from all communities.
Committee vice-chairman Ph Nando Luwang said that Manipuris fromdifferent states and countries would be joining the observance and the committee warmly welcomes their participation and stand for the unity of the state.
He then said that the threat to the unity, identity and integrity of the state still exists under the divisive policy of the Government of India.
It needs a united stand to thwart off these forces, he said.
