Bpr, April 03 2018:
Kumbi AC MLA S Bira today inspected construction/ layering works of a 4 km stretch from Ngakouching to Ichumtabi under Borayangbi Gram Panchayat, Bishnupur district.
Layering works to elevate the 4km road adjacent to the Manipur river is being undertaken from the fund of MLA Local Area Development Fund.
The road is being elevated 4 feet to avoid influx of water during rainy season.
The areas have been hit hard by the recent flood in 2015 and 2017.Rising water level in the Manipur river has been a constant threat to the villages just across the road during rainy seasons.
The MLA said people will feel safer once the work is done.
After the layering work, the road will be black topped, he said.
The layering work at the 4 km stretch (Ngakouching to Ichumtabi) is part of a ongoing layering work covering 23 km river side road from Ithai Barrage to Ichumtabi.
The small stretch was prioritised considering the concern of the people in the areas as rainy season is approaching, he said.
The work at the 23 km river side road is expected to be finished within 15 days, he added.
The MLA furthered that 'Sugnu Hump' a 100 feet wide area in the river is key to controlling flood.
The area (Sugnu Hump) which acts as a spillway, if widen about 300 feet will facilitate passage of more water thereby controlling the flood, he said.
A proposal will be made to the Govt to effect the same, he added.
