Documenting traditions of NE

Institute of Asian Studies
(MAKAIAS), an autonomous
body under the Union Ministry
of Culture has taken up projects
for documenting folk and oral
cultural traditions of the North
East.
It has organised a number
of workshops across the region
involving university
students and researchers.
The organisation with cooperation
of Indian Council
of Historical Research
(ICHR) under Ministry of
Human Resources Department
and Assam University,
Silchar will organise such a
week-long National and international
workshop from April
23 to 30 here with special
focus on Barak valley areas
of Assam.
"The North East of India
has been home to a myriad of
ethnic groups whose lives and
art have crisscrossed in the
course of the region's history.
The oral cultural traditions,
folk or otherwise, do not
merely contain the population's
history, but is also a
gateway to the lives and
struggles of diverse ethnic
groups that have survived
across time", further said
