Imphal, October 03 2014 :
A bicycle rally was taken out today on the theme of saving Sangai.
The rally was organised by the Wildlife Wing, Forest Department in collaboration with the Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum.
The cycle rally which will terminate at Laphupat Tera was flagged off from the Keibul Lamjao National Park Forest office by Moirang Khunou-Kha Thinungei Zilla Parishad Member Ningthoujam (O) Indira and SDO Moirangthem Tomcha.
Speaking at the occasion, Keibul Lamjao National Park Range Office L Biramangol said that October 1-7 is being observed as Wildlife Week across the world.
In Manipur too, several painting competitions, wildlife photography competitions and essay competitions are being held since October 1 on the common theme of protecting wildlife.
Today's cycle rally is also aimed at garnering mass support towards the campaign for protection of wildlife including the endangered Sangai, he added.
Pointing that Sangai is not found anywhere in the world except Keibul Lamjao National Park, Biramangol asserted that it is the bounden duty of each and every citizen of Manipur to protect and preserve Sangai.
Sangai is an animal accustomed to living on phumdi (floating mass) but the ever degrading environmental condition is posing a serious challenge to the survival of Sangai.
In order to protect Sangai, KeibulLamjao National Park and its surrounding areas should not be disturbed, the Range Officer said.
On account of the Forest Department's relentless efforts, the situation has improved considerably but the situation still does not guarantee complacency.
While appealing to all the people to help the Forest Department in its efforts to protect Sangai, Biramangol informed the gathering that the population of Sangai has now crossed 200 .
