Imphal, October 03 2014 :
The 25th Loktak Ningshing Numit would be held on October 8 at Sendra Tourist ground, said MLA T Mangibabu and Loktak Lake Development Organisation president and former Minister H Sanayaima.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur press club today, Mangibabu and Sanayaima said that the Loktak Ninghsing Numit is observed every year since 1990 .
They appealed to the people of Manipur and the State Government to help so as to make the celebration a grand success.
The event would be celebrated with a slogan 'Loktak is our priceless asset, Loktak is a mother figure and we must save Loktak' .
Threadbare discussion programmes with scholars and experts would be organised as a part of the event in order to explore ways and means which can rescue Loktak lake from further deterioration and restore it to an ecologically healthy status.
The lake has been shrinking every year and its total area is 236.21 square/km and its depth has been reduced to just 2.03 meter.
Looking at the speed in which the the lake has been shrinking, a consultative measure has become very crucial to save the lake from drying completely.
The LDA has been taking up many programmes under which phumdis have been cleared from the lake.
It has also been scooping out under water mud from shallow areas of the lake to maintain its depth.
Afforestation programmes are underway at the places where rivers which drain into Loktak lake originate, they added.
Keibul Lamjao, an island exists in the midst of Loktak Lake and is home to the Sangai, which is only found in Manipur.
The need to save Loktak lake has been a growing need in the last few years since it has been bearing the brunt of the time for ages.
