Manipur Education Policy to be updated: Minister Okendro

Imphal, July 12 2012: Admitting that the existing education policy of the state is outdated, Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro today assured the Assembly that the government would update the Manipur Education Policy in order to meet the changing trend of education in today's society.

Giving reply to a question of MLA RK Imo, who wanted to know the reason for posting teachers for more than 25 years in hill areas without any transfer, the Minister said that the state Education Department has its own Transfer and Posting Policy.

The government would review the policy and rearrange all the transfer and posting of teachers in the state.

In reply to a question of MLA Joykishan who demanded to know why there is delay in completionof Sewerage projects in Imphal city, PHED Minister I Hemochandra said that the project is almost completed except for some works.

Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Nasir told the House that the government is planning to declare drought in state if the monsoon continues to remain elusive.

In the meantime, government is planning to provide adequate irrigation facilities to the farmers of the state.

The Minister was responding to a question raised by MLA L Ibomcha over the government's stand on the present drought like situation in the state.

Education Minister Okendro informed the House that there are 340 Aided Schools in the valley districts with 1132 teachers.

In 2008, out of 8193 students admitted in Aided schools, 8129 of them sat the HSLC Examination.

He further informed that there are 427 Part Time College Lecturers in the state and all of them would be utilised further.

There is no provision for regularizing the services of the Part Time Higher Secondary Lecturers, who have worked for 25 years, for the time being, Okendro said.

However, the Minister hastened to add that he would see that if any plan could be formulated for regularizing the services of Part-Time lecturers.

Forest and Envornment Minister Th Devendra informed that the House that Manipur has an area of 1,467 sq km of reserved forest and the government is planting more plants than felling them down.
