Ukhrul, December 07 2022:
Giving teeth to the Government's War on Drugs, Ukhrul district administration and police destroyed tracts of poppy fields at Ringui village, Lungchong Meiphai sub-division today.
The team was led by Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar and Superintendent of Police Ningshem Vashum along with the SDO of Lungchong Meiphai Block.
The district administration officials and personnel of 6th Manipur Rifles surveyed the area and destroyed more than 20 acres of poppy plantations.
Many illegal materials used in the plantation and cultivation of poppy were also seized by the team.
Appropriate actions under relevant laws will be initiated against persons involved in the plantation, said police.
Apart from destroying the poppy plantation, awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging villagers to choose alternative livelihoods were also held at Ringui (Tungou) village and neighbouring Teinem village.
Seeds of crops and manure for use as fertilizers were also distributed to farmers under the district Agriculture and Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department during the awareness programme.
The district administration officials said the anti-poppy drive was conducted to help realize the vision of Chief Minister N Biren Singh to make Manipur a drug free State.
The district administration will strive to bring about a drug free atmosphere in the district and engage wholeheartedly to provide alternative livelihood to villagers, they said.
