NE political parties eye common forum

A joint meeting of the regional political parties of the entire North East region would be held on October 20 and 21 at Guwahati to initiate the spade work for setting up a common political forum of the region so that common issues of the region can be tackled and highlighted to the Centre collectively.
Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) working president Atul Bora and secretary general Pradip Hazarika today visited Imphal and held a meeting with MPP leaders.
Later briefing media persons in the afternoon at MPP office, the AGP leaders conveyed about their initiatives for setting up a common political forum for all regional political parties of the North East region.
Atul Bora said that they have already met NPF leaders including Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and they were receptive of the proposal to set up a common political forum.

Leaders of different regional political parties based in Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, Sikkim and Meghalaya would attend the meeting scheduled on October 20 and 21 at Hotel Brahmaputra Ashoka, Guwahati.
In addition, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Chandrababu Naidu of TDP and Surjit Singh Barnala of Akali Dal would be present at the meeting.
Noting that a large number of Bangladeshis are living in the North East region unlawfully, Atul Bora decried that the UPA Government led by Congress party has shown little concern to the foreigners which would have far reaching ramifications in the whole region.
Stating that support Irom Sharmila's campaign, Atul Bora asserted that the whole North East region need to be united on the issue of Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
Assam is also witnessing an issue similar to the one witnessed in Manipur over border fencing.
But New Delhi pays little attention to these sensitive issues and it is only interested in resources found in the region, Atul Bora said.
MPP spokesman H Nabashyam said that their would raise common problems and issues of the region during the meeting scheduled on October 20 and 21 .
MPP would extend full support to the 12 hours general strike called by the Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing on October 7 against the controversial border fencing work.
MPP president N Sovakiran was also present at the press meet.
