Prizes distributed to winners of 2nd Literary Meet

Winners of the second district level literary meet conducted by the SSA and RMSA Churchandpur were awarded today in an impressive function held at YPA Hall here with school going students showcasing their otherwise unexplored hair raising talents.
The literary competition which was set into motion since mid-April at the block level attained its zenith today with Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing and Director Education (S), SPD, SSA and RMSA, H Deleep Singh attending the valedictory function.
Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the district SSA and RMSA Jacintha Lazarus said the literary meet which was now held consecutively for two years is an attempt to bring the students on board while adopting a holistic approach in imparting education them.
Her suggestions for institutionalizing the practice � of conducting literary meet that has now been a couple of years old in the district, for all the districts throughout the State was received affirmatively by the Education Director.
The Director said the education department will soon organise a State level Debate, Essay Writing and Quiz competitions for students.
On its second year, the district literary meet has witnessed students competing in elocution, singing, choreography, painting and skit.
Jacintha had in her speech claimed that the competition was first organised at the block level across the district then at the district level, winners of which were awarded today.
The SSA has born the expenses of students all through the competition to ensure that monetary factors do not hinder any willing student from taking part in the meet, she added.
The meet has also for the first time, had a separate category for students with disability, ensuring the active participation of those students with special needs.
Tonsing, who was given the privilege of handing over prizes to all the winners, said he was proud that the district has consecutively outdone others in capitalizing the talents of school going children.
He said the meet and similar efforts was the secret behind the district scripting successful results in the SSC and other competitive exams.
The education director, H Deleep Singh on his part stressed on the need for an effective SMDC to improve educational quality in Government schools.
He said the department has initiated several corrective measures to improve the State's ailing education system, which as of now shows favourable results in some areas but added that the department has the task of carrying a huge baggage of the past.
It will be impossible to wash off all the dirt in one go, but maintained that the department has started re-looking the system and initiated the much needed corrective measures.
He also went on record to declare that the education department is planning to introduce, for the first time, a common calendar for all the schools in the State beginning next year - which if realized in reality would be of a major achievement for the department.
