72-hrs bandh affects Imphal-Moreh Section of NH-102

The 72-hour blockade along Imphal-Moreh section of National Highway (NH) 102 imposed by Joint Action Committee of All Manipur Hill Districts Contract Basis Teachers Association (AMHDCBTA) affected normal life on the second day.
Since April 20 midnight, the association enforced the blockade on Inter State Road Transport Services demanding regularisation of contract teachers appointed by the Directorate of Education (S) Hills, Manipur in 2006 .
A group of contract teachers and volunteers blocked the Imphal-Moreh section of National Highway by piling up of woods and boulder near Thamlapokpi Village in Chandel District.
They also set goods on fire after pulling them down from vehicles plying along the highway.
Speaking to media persons, L Angacha, a contract teacher said that based on the MoU signed between the State Government and All Tribal Student's Union Manipur, the Directorate of Education (S) Hills appointed and engaged teachers on contract basis to cater to the needs of the schools located in the hills.
However, the State Government failed extend the services and stopped paying remuneration since 2008, he said.
L Angacha further maintained that the Directorate of Education (S) apprised the higher authority for necessary action after conducting physical verification along with relevant documents of the teachers for extension/regularisation of service in 2011 .
He said Association is compelled to impose the blockade and will continue to intensify the agitation, if the State Government failed to consider the demands and redress the grievances at the earliest.
