Imphal, January 21 2017:
Headed by Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM), a large number of people today staged an anti-economic blockade protest demonstration in Kwairamband Keithel from 11 am till 3 pm.
The sit-in protest was joined by women vendors, members of Meira Paibi Lups, civil society organisations, human rights activists and representatives of student bodies.
PPCM convenor Ph Deban Sharma said that representatives of Joint Forum for Peace Manipur met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh wherein the forum urged the Centre to formulate viable steps in consultation with the State Government and end the economic blockade.

Ph Deban said that the sit-in protest was held mainly to end the economic blockade immediately and restore normalcy in the State.
"People have been going through harrowing experiences due to UNC's economic blockade and it is unfortunate that the Centre and State Government have failed to take up decisive steps to end this issue," he asserted.
Deban further said that the economic blockade has not only led to shortage of essential commodities but also created misunderstanding among the communities of the State.
There is no certainty as to what will happen during this fragile situation.
If any untoward incident erupts then the Centre and State Government should be held responsible.
"Any organisation has the right to protest against the Centre and State Government democratically.
However, taking advantage of the rights and creating hardships to the public can, more or less, be termed as a step against the society.
As such, UNC should realize the fact that it is the people who are suffering, not the Government.
It is high time that UNC reconsiders its stand," he added.
