Day I of all India general strike peaceful in State

No untoward incident was reported on the first day of the 48-hour Nationwide strike called by 11 Central Trade Unions of the country raising 10 different demands and indefinite bandh clamped by VDF personnel of the State demanding increase in their honorarium.
However, normal life was affected during the bandh as most of the business establishments, banks and educational institutions remained closed while inter-State and inter-district passenger bus services were suspended.
Even though the State Home Department beefed up security to thwart any violent activities, bandh supporters tried to block roads in some areas.
Traffic was relatively thin on major roads during the bandh.

Although, the strike did not affect normal life in the hill district headquarters, normal life was partially affected in the valley districts and Jiribam.
However, no violence and untoward incident was reported from any part of the State till the time of filing this report.
On the other hand, the Co-ordinating Body of Trade Union, Manipur has claimed that the 48-hour Nationwide strike clamped by 11 Central Trade Unions in association with independent trade unions and federations of the country raising 10 different demands for workers and employees was successful on the first day in the State.
A press statement issued by Committee Chairman L Sontinkumar said that the stir would be intensified on the second day tomorrow.
Staff meetings were held picketing their respective offices by the employees of banks, Insurance companies, BSNL, Post and Telegraph, Account and Auditor General and State Government etc.
Lauding various workers and employees for extending support to the stir on the first day, L Sotinkumar said that the stir would be intensified on the second day tomorrow with holding of court arrest, picketing and meetings.
The Committee's stir will end at 5 am of February 22 .
