Imphal, February 20 2013:
The 22-member team of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU), who are on an external tour to Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has visited Mount Harriet, which is believed to be the final resting place of Maharaja Kulachandra.
After the Khongjom War of 1891 that led to British forces capturing the throne of Manipur and execution of Manipuri heroes like Yubaraj Tikendrajit, Thangal General and Chirai Naga, Maharaja Kulachandra was convicted of "waging war" against the Queen Empress and deported to Andaman & Nicobar Islands along with 13 of his associates.
There, they were made to stay in a Bungalow at Mount Harriet.
The visiting team observed two minutes silence as mark respect to Maharaja Kulachandra and his associates, who spent their last days in exile at Mount Harriet.
It may be recalled here that a team of AMWJU had earlier visited Andaman & Nicobar Islands in 2003 and urged the then Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands to provide a place in Mount Harriet to construct a memorial tomb in remembrance of Maharaja Kulachandra and his associates.
However, since Mt Harriet is a reserve forest area and it would require the approval of Union Govt, AMWJU approached the Chief Minister of Manipur to press the Union Govt in this regard.
But no positive response has been received so far.
So this time, 'team AMWJU' would be meeting Lt Gen (Retd) Bhupendra Singh, the current Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands on Feb 22 to raise the issue once again.
