Twin-bandh affects normal life

As in other parts of the country, normal life in Manipur remained affected to a certain extent on account of the nationwide bandh called by trade unions and the indefinite bandh enforced by Village Defense Force (VDF) .
The indefinite bandh of VDF started from 6 pm yesterday demanding hike in their salary as well as decrying use of VDF in the personal works of high ranking police officials while the 2-day long nationwide strike called jointly by 11 trade unions commenced today to protest against the alleged UPA Government's anti-labour and anti-people policies.
Since early morning, VDF bandh supporters came out along Tidim road and as well as in Sawombung area of Imphal East burning tyres and woods on the roads to prevent movement of vehicular traffic.
Bandh supporters also blocked the road at Kakwa area and resorted to breaking of windshields of vehicles plying in defiance of the bandh.
The bandh supporters were, however, dispersed by Police.
As a result of the twin-bandh, most of the shops and other business establishment remained closed.
Passenger vehicles also stayed away from the roads.
Almost all the educational institutions, both government and private, were closed.
However, no unwanted incidents have been reported during the course of the bandhs so far.
Meanwhile, United Forum of banks Union (UFBU), Manipur State Committee staged a sit in protest in front of SBI office at MG Avenue here today in support of the general strike being called by the trade unions.
