Imphal, June 17 2014:
A bus driver of Zet Travels has been abducted by suspected cadres of KCP-MC (Lamyanba Khuman) from Murti Hotel, Jakhlabandha, Assam.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, the All Manipur Night Super Drivers' Welfare Association secretary Laishram Irabot said that Thokchom Ingobi (45) s/o late Th Nimai of Khongjom Mamang Leikai was ferrying passengers from Guwahati to Imphal on June 13 .
On the way to Imphal, Ingobi and his passengers were having their meal at Murti Hotel when some unidentified persons suspected to be cadres of KCP-MC (Lamyanba Khuman) appeared out of nowhere and whisked away the bus driver.
It was later learnt from a phone call that Ingobi was abducted by KCP-MC (Lamyanba Khuman).
The outfit collects annual tax of Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 from the bus owners.
The annual tax has not been paid for this year.
That was why, Ingobi was abducted, Irabot said.
Saying that drivers are poor folks struggling for livelihood, Irabot decried the act of keeping drivers hostage for ransom.
The bus driven by Ingobi belongs to one K Jitendrakumar of Guwahati.
After Ingobi was abducted from Jakhlabandha, his assistant drove the bus and brought the passengers to Imphal.
Even as numerous MoU's have been inked with the Government, no concrete measures have been initiated till date for the safety and security
of drivers.
