Court permits floral tributes offering at Cheiraoching memorial

A single bench of Gauhati High Court has given its ruling to permit offering of floral tributes at Cheiraoching memorial on April 13.The memorial was constructed in the honour of nine persons who were slain in a gun battle at Kodompokpi of Imphal West district on April 13, 1982 with a police team.
The families of the nine slain persons filed a writ petition pleading the Court not to limit the duration and number of persons in offering floral tribute at the memorial on the said day.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club today, Advocate N Surendrajit who stood in favour of the petitioners said, after perusing the merit of the writ petition, a Single Bench led by Justice TNK Singh gave its ruling on April 10 to permit paying floral tributes on April 13 at the memorial.
Advocate Surendrajit also said that the Court also directed the State Government not to limit the duration and number of persons for paying floral tributes.
He said that the Court has today intimated the Government in this regard by despatching official copies to the State Home Secretary, Imphal West District Magistrate, Imphal West SP, Imphal Police Station O/C and Lamphel Police Station O/C.Urging the State Government and law enforcing agencies not to disturb the people who would come at the memorial for the said ceremony, families of the nine slain persons urged the general public to attend the ceremony on traditional dress.
