ATSUM suspends stir temporarily

All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM) has temporarily suspended its stir of shutting down all Central Projects being taken up in the hill districts of the State following an understanding with the State Government today.
ATSUM has called shut down of all Central Projects in the hill areas since February 3 midnight in pursuit of its demand for effective governance and all-round development, particularly in the education sector, in the hills.
Announcing suspension of the stir to media, Majabung Gangmei, spokesperson of ATSUM, informed that the representatives of ATSUM met representatives of the State Government at around 10 am today.
In the meeting, the State Government was represented by Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Francis Ngajokpa and MLA of Tamei A/C Z Kikhonbou Newmai.
In the meeting which lasted for about 2, representatives of the State Government assured that another round of meeting would be held on February 16 at 3 pm to discuss the demands of ATSUM in detail.
Following that, ATSUM resolved to suspend its stir of shutting down all Central Projects being taken up in the hill districts of the State for some time with effect from 6 pm today, Majabung Gangmei announced.
ATSUM has been demanding setting up of Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes and B Ed centres in all the hill districts and appointment of adequate teaching and non-teaching staff in all the educational institutions with better infrastructure.
It may be mentioned that ATSUM imposed ban the ongoing works related to construction of railway line from Imphal to Jiribam from February 3 midnight.
