Imphal, June 29 2021:
As the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) has been dissolved after its tenure lapsed, IMC corporators have urged the government to form an ad-hoc committee by selecting a corporator each from the seven assembly segments which are under the jurisdiction of the corporation to combat Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking to media persons at IMC office on Tuesday, former Ward number 3 corporator and IMC health and sanitation committee chairman Hijam Nutanchandra recounted that after tenure of IMC corporators elected in 2016 expired, the government dissolved the IMC on June 15.The corporators are not upset with the dissolution as it is done according to the law of the land, he added.
While pointing out that the state government and the people have been fighting hard against the Covid-19 pandemic, Nutanchandra said that the corporators who have been at the forefront of combating the pandemic will not retreat from their fight.
So, in order to aid the government in its battle against the pandemic, chief minister N Biren who is also MAHUD in-charge should form an ad-hoc committee of IMC until the next IMC election is conducted, he suggested, while adding that there is no harm in conducting IMC election before or after the state assembly election.
Noting that Covid positivity and fatality rates are still high in the seven assembly segments of IMC, Nutanchandra reiterated for forming an ad-hoc committee so that IMC officials could help in the fight against the infectious disease.
