Imphal, March 02 2014 :
Janata Dal (United) Manipur unit has demanded that External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid highlight the controversial boundary fencing project on the India (Manipur)-Myanmar border at the ministerial meeting of BIMSTEC countries to be held in Myanmar.
Stating that Salman Khurshid would be attending the Ministerial meeting of BIMSTEC countries starting in Nay Pi Taw of Myanmar from tomorrow, State unit JD (U) president M Tombi said as the official delegate of India, the External Affairs Minister should highlight controversies kicked up by the boundary fencing project to the BIMSTEC representatives so that Manipur does not lose its territorial boundary consequent to the project.
Speaking to newspersons at the Babupara office today, the party's State unit chief suggested that the Union Minister capitalise on the gathering of international figures to not only convey anxiety and dissatisfaction of the people of Manipur arising out of the boundary fencing issue but to also propose fresh demarcation of the Indo-Myanmar boundary in Manipur sector.
Reminding that there is no guarantee that the Congress party will remain in power, Tombi said Salman Khurshid needs to showcase that the Congress led UPA Government is committed to upholding interest of Manipur and work/act accordingly.
As the people of Manipur have every right to convey displeasure and oppose any project(s) that stand to compromise territorial integrity of Manipur the Central Government too should ensure that issues that hurt sentiment of the people are addressed with top priority, he maintained.
Tombi also opined that Government of Manipur should concentrate on mitigating problems associated with a number of educated youth remaining jobless by working on a viable youth policy rather than the Ministers making tall claims at public events.
