PMGSY works slow down

Imphal, December 24 2018: It has been reported that various works taken up under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGS Y) in the State, have considerably slowed down during the last 2-3 years.

According to a reliable source, as per a report of the Ministry of Rural Development, 1485.85 kilometres of roads were constructed in the State during 2016-17 under the scheme.

The roads were constructed at the rate of 4.07 km per day.

During 2017-18, 731.199 kms of roads were constructed at the rate of 2 kms per day.

For the current financial year 2018-19, 216.189 km of roads have been constructed till November at the abysmal rate of 0.86 km per day.

The source continued that the States where construction of the roads are to be done are selected based on the Rural Roads Manual laid down by Indian Road Congress (IRC) and the roads are monitored under 3 tiers.

This ensures that the roads constructed under the scheme are of good quality, the source said adding that out of 1,78,184 eligible villages in the State, 1,58,013 villages were selected by the Ministry for the scheme.

Out of the said selected villages, 1,44,398 have now been connected with all weather roads, the source informed.

Pointing out that the roads and the works are reviewed from time to time, the source conveyed that 1023 villages are yet to be covered by the scheme although the Ministry has sanctioned necessary funds for the construction of roads in 688 out of the said villages.

The source continued that out of the said 688 villages, roads have been properly constructed at 527 villages while that of 141 are still to be completed.

The Ministry has sanctioned Rs 600 crore for the construction of 1200 km all weather roads for the year 2018-19 for 110 villages.
