27th Imphal Book Fair 2018 concludes

Imphal, December 24 2018:
The 27th Imphal Book Fair 2018, organised by State Central Library and Raja Ram Mohun Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata, at THAU Ground, concluded today.
The closing ceremony of the 10 days programme was attended by Art and Culture Commissioner M Lakshmikumar, Joint Director L Keshorjit and THAU president Naorem Ranjit as the presidium members.
Speaking at the event, M Lakshmikumar said that the fair was organised so as to motivate the readers, the authors, publishers and the vendors selling the books as well as to inculcate reading habits among the people.
To bring in more crowd and visitors different events/programmes were added during the book fair, he explained.
Stressing on the impoi nee of reading, the Art and Culture Commissioner said that reading is the main source of gaining knowledge and wisdom.
If the children and the youth are infused with the desire for reading, society will develop.
This will be made possible only through events like book fairs, he added.
The Commissioner also stressed on the importance of libraries.
On the other hand, THAU president Naorem Ranjit expressed pride at the union getting involved in such a positive initiative for development.
Informing that the fair was also organised at the same premises in the past, Ranjit assured that steps will be taken up to discuss possible inclusion of Imphal Book Fair as a calendar programme during the THAU Management Committee meeting.
Speaking at the event Chief Librarian of State Central Library, Elangbam Latakishwar informed that events like painting competition, quiz competitions and extempore speech competition were organised as a part of the fair, apart from book release function and public meet event with authors, Shumang Leela and film artists as well as sports personalities and well established and eminent personalities.
He continued that a total of 70 stalls were opened during the fair and 28 publishers'and sellers were from outside the State.
As a part of the closing ceremony, the winners of the painting, quiz and extempore speech competitions were felicitated as well.
