Imphal, November 10 2021:
As the leaders of Congress continue to lead the party as their own personal property, the party now only has 14 MLAs left out of 28 elected in the 2014 assembly election.
Although Congress MLAs claim of riot joining BJP, many are planning to join the latter on one of the auspicious days in this month, contended Sagolband MLA RK Imo.
Stating that Congress MLAs only see him as the son-in-law of CM N Biren and nothing else, Imo recounted instances of Congress MLAs coming to see him (Imo) with requests but refusing to communicate with him on any of the party's matters.
Congress president TN Haokip was removed from his post so as to curb his (Imo) power and influence in the party.
The party has been iterating the works it had done during its rule for 15 years, some of which is true.
However, it is unfortunate that the party is now being run as fiefdom of few.
Thus, it is only evitable for Congress MLAs to leave the party and join BJP, he remarked.
The MLA then informed that around 2-3 MLAs are preparing to join BJP this month and are only waiting to select an auspicious day.
He went on to say that the MLAs are joining BJP to help it expand its roots and as such, urged for bringing back the BJP government in the state by carrying out all necessary activities in consultation with central party leaders.
RK Imo, who joined BJP at the party's head office in New Delhi on November 8, was warmly welcomed by people of his constituency at the Airport in Wednesday.
Later, a public meeting was organised by Sagolband Constituency Progressive Committee (SCPC) at the parking area in front of Bijoy Govinda temple.
In his address, MLA RK Imo recounted that although he won the previous election on Congress ticket, huge political changes was witnessed in Sagolband AC and the state.
Under PM Modi's leadership, a peaceful, development-oriented and well-rooted government was formed, which placed importance on the issues of Jammu & Kashmir and the northeast region.
The MLA continued: "In addition to implementation of the ILP system, the BJP government has improved the law and order in the state, successfully prevented bandh/blockades and strengthened the bond between the hills and the valley.
Many welfare schemes have also been introduced for the people, all of which made me decide to join BJP".
Recalling that the MLAs could not meet the CM of the previous government aside from Tuesday, Imo observed that in addition to meeting the MLAs at any given time, the present CM has allocated a separate day to meet the people.
The new government has clearly shown the need for a good government-people relationship.
As the present government is a coalition of different political parties, it is not able spread its roots.
Nonetheless, he decided to join BJP to help the government become well rooted under the leadership of CM N Biren for the next 10 years.
"I have been an unattached MLA for over a year.
My family has been a fierce supporter of Congress so it is very emotional at the moment.
CM N Biren himself was part of Congress but he (Biren) decided to join another party after experiencing the unwillingness of Congress leaders and restriction on performing one's duty for the people.
If then Congress leaders had suppressed CM Biren successfully, Congress would be have been a powerful party now.
Thus, my reason behind leaving Congress was similar to the CM's.In-spite of my family being ardent Congress loyalists, I didn't get the party ticket in 2012 but in 2021.1 am not someone who will join any political party easily but my present decision was due to extenuating circumstances," he contended.
The meeting was also attended by SCPC members, including women and youth wing members along with supporters of MLA RK Imo.
