MSCW memo to CM airs plight of women

Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Dr Binota Meinam called on chief minister N Biren on Wednesday and submitted recommendations for women empowerment and safety.
Speaking to The People's Chronicle, professor Binota conveyed that she spoke with the CM over various issues that need to be addressed.
While accepting the recommendations, CM Biren assured to take up necessary initiatives so as to implement the same, she said.
Among the recommendations, the commission drew attention of the CM and BJP to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women in selecting candidates for the forthcoming state assembly and ADC elections.
Raising the issues of early marriage and crimes against women, the commission also recommended the government to strictly implement the Marriage Registration Act to prevent early marriage.
Other recommendations include implementations of gender policy; setting up coordinating centre for MSCW in every district with two members and one coordinator each for prevention of crimes against women, ensuring security and women empowerment; organising leadership training programmes for both men and women through social welfare department; reviewing outdated customary laws and enacting relevant Acts to uplift standard of women; creation of a separate department for women and child development; setting up women police stations in remaining districts; and setting up population regulation commission to regulate and check entry of non-locals under ILP system, she added.
