Imphal, September 23 2018:
Claiming that the weight and measurement used in the vendors and shops located in and around Ima Market were found failing to meet the standard of weight and measurement, social researcher Serto Tondana Kom drew the attention of the Departments concerned regarding the weight and measurement instruments/tools used in and around the business establishments present at Ima Market.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club, yesterday, Serto Tondana informed that he carried out a survey regarding the instruments used for weighing and measuring items and goods at the vendors and the shops present in and around the Ima market yesterday.
He added that he even bought some goods, including fish, dal and fruits from the vendors and shops of Ima Market and its surroundings as part of his survey.
While measuring the weight of the goods bought from the vendors and shops with a weighing instrument verified by the State's Department of Weight and Measurement, he found inconsistencies between the two weights.
He also pointed out that the shopkeeper of a grocery shop near Ima Market weighed 1.02 kg (1 kg and 20 gram) in his (the owner) electronic weighing instrument when he (Serto) bought 1 kg of dal and the owner claimed that said that he did so to avoid giving him (Serto) less quantity of dal.
Maintaining that the different weight and measures (instruments) have their respective validity period, he stated that the authorities concerned seem to have failed to check the instruments used in the shops and vendors in the State as most of them are still using instruments which are many years old.
He continued that customers are generally suspicious while buying any items or goods from the shops as they think that the quantities of the goods will be compromised somehow.
Serto then urged the State Government as well as the Department concerned to look into the matter in the interest of the society and to update the weight and measurement instruments used in the shops and business establishments in the State on a timely basis.
He also asked the Government and all the authorities concerned to do a mass survey regarding the issue and do the needful to regain the trust of the customers.
