MANIPUR POLICE has put up a proposal to the Centre for handing over the security protection of the Manipur chief minister to the National Security Guard, official source said Friday.
The state police chief, Y Joykumar put up the proposal to the Union ministry of home affairs during a high-level security review meeting chaired by national security advisor M K Narayanan on the north-east along with the police chiefs of region at New Delhi, the official source here said.
State police chief also insisted the MHA for setting up high protection force for deployment along the highways passing through the state, the source further disclosed.
The security of the state chief minister, O Ibobi Singh has been a question in the state after the recent two bomb blasts which targeted the chief minister's bungalow.
While the state security force has been on high alert in and around the chief minister's bungalow after a lathod bomb fired by militants exploded inside the bungalow, another hand grenade was exploded nearby at the main road passing through the western side of the same bungalow on October 19 night.
The explosion took place when the state police is celebrating its raising day on the same day.
Both the blast had been claimed by the People Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, PREPAK, a armed rebel group fighting for sovereignty of the state.
They have been warning chief minister O Ibobi Singh to rectify his alleged misdeed in the pass.
The proposal for deployment of the NSG for protection of the chief minister was taken in a high level security review meeting convened by the Manipur chief secretary on November 3 last, the source disclosed.
The meeting thoroughly discussed on the security scenario in the state and resolved to press the MHA for provision of the NSG for protection of the state chief minister.
In the recent review meeting chaired by national security advisor M K Narayanan, state police chief also submit a written request regarding the setting up of high protection force for the national highways passing through the state and other neighbouring states of Manipur.
