The 9th foundation day of Herbert School, Airport Road, Ghari was celebrated at its auditorium today.
Though Governor Gurbachan Jagat who was supposed to be the chief guest of the function could not attend the celebration due to some other scheduled engagements, Rajya Sabha MP Rishang Keishing and former Minister Dr M Nara graced the function as guest of honour and president respectively.
Presenting his report, the principal of the school stated that the institution has been set up with a missionary zeal of establishing an ideal science institution at 10+2 level where quality education would be imparted with a vision of achieving academic excellence.
At the initial stage, Bank of Baroda, Thangal Bazar, Imphal helped the school by offering loan and in 2003, octogenarian social worker and politician Rishing Keishing, now the MP of Rajya Sabha generously donated Rs 10 lakh which made possible in construction of the school auditorium, he said.
On the achievement of the school in the academic front, the principal said since its inception the performance of the students in the Higher Secondary examination has been very good.
In the first year of its functioning in 2002, the school had recorded an appreciable pass percentage of 99.6 percent with four students among the merit list of first 10 toppers.
In the subsequent years, the students of the school have also performed well bagging the top position five times in 2003,2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 and created a history of sort by topping Higher Secondary Examination three times in a row.
Still more spectacular achievement of the school was in this year's examination when 100 percent pass percentage was recorded with 244 students in first divisioners and only 8 in second division out of the total 252 candidates appeared.
The principal also informed that gathering that in all 15 Herbertians cleared in the entrance examination of the MBBS and BDS courses conducted by the Medical Directorate this year.
A good number of Herbertians have also got selected in IIT, AIEE and MIT, he added.
In his address as guest of honour of the function, Rishang Keishing said the future of the institution is very bright and its reputation should not be compromised at any cost but continue to be a model of quality educational institution.
The MP also called upon the people to come together as one and work with pure heart so that development and peace may prevail in the society.
In his presidential address, Dr Nara observed that educational institutions should not be disturbed at all.
He also pointed out that Government teachers who receive Rs 20,000 every month salary could not produce a single topper whereas the teachers of the private institutes who get only 2500 as monthly salary have been producing toppers.
Dr Nara also promised the Herbertians that from the next academic session he would be sponsoring the toppers to study at Mangalore.
Cultural programme and presentation of the prize to the student toppers of the school were other highlights of the celebration.
