Imphal, November 07 2008:
Around 200 good laden trucks which were stranded beyond Mao gate following the imposition of economic blockade on NH-39 by the Senapati District Students' Association to protest the pitiable condition of NH-39 in Senapati, were allowed to cross Mao gate today taking into account the suffering of the people.
The trucks reached Imphal late evening today.
However, SDSA has decreed that save for passenger vehicles no other heavy vehicles, including empty trucks will be allowed to ply on NH-39 from tomorrow.

The trucks were allowed to cross Mao gate and proceed to Imphal after a meeting was convened at Senapati between representatives of All Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association, SDSA, ANSAM, KSO (Sadar Hills), Senapati Truck Owners Association, Senapati Drivers' Welfare Association and representatives of different NGOs.
After minutely discussing the suffering of the people, it was agreed that a one day relaxation would be offered today.
The trucks which were stranded beyond Mao gate on the Nagaland side were allowed to proceed towards Imphal from 2 pm today.
Speaking to some reporters at Mao gate, the president of SDSA said that the one day relaxation was decided upon as the transporters had extended their co-operation as well as supported their cause.
Making the stand of SDSA clear, the student leader said that the economic blockade has been imposed not to harass the public, but to improve NH-39 .
The appeals from the All Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association, All Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association and All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers Union were also noted positively, added the SDSA president.
The suffering of the people and the stranded drivers were also other factors for the one day relaxation, he added.
The SDSA president also hailed the decision of the truck drivers not to go along with the security escort which arrived at Mao gate in solidarity with the cause of the student body.
It is not only the people living along NH-39 who have to bear with the pitiable condition of the road, but also the drivers who have to travel by this route regularly, noted the student leader.
Though a one day relaxation was granted today, no other trucks, including empty ones, either from Dimapur or Imphal will be allowed to ply on NH-39 from tomorrow, he said.
Taking questions from the reporters, the SDSA president said that the blockade will be lifted only after the actual process of repairing the highway starts.
General secretary of KSO (Sadar Hills) Lalboi Khongsai said that they extended support to the economic blockade as it was called to protest the condition of NH-39 .
Meanwhile, Works Minister K Ranjit, Education Minister L Jayenta and MLA K Raina are presently at Senapati to over see the condition of NH-39 and they are likely to meet representatives of SDSA tomorrow at 3 pm.
On the other hand, BRTF has opened NH-53, which was closed to heavy trucks due to the weak bridges.
