Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has taken initiative to upgrade the postal service in the Northeast by setting up 1000 more post offices in the region by next financial year, UNI reports.
Official sources here today said that at present 6,637 Post offices were functioning in rural areas of the Northeast while 34,774 villages in the region did not have postal counters which hampered regular delivery of letters, collection of mail from letter-boxes and sale of stamps.
In the villages of these people were using basic postal facilities through nearest existing post offices and other alternative means like Panchayat Sanchar Seva Kendras (PSSKs), officials stated adding that new post offices would be opened in a phased manner as per prescribed norms and availability of resources.
