Imphal, March 02 2011:
CM O Ibobi has noted the demand for bifurcation of Ukhrul district for making Phungyar Assembly constituency a full-fledged revenue district of the state and has started taking up necessary action, said MLA Wunaoshung Keishing today.
The MLA said that the CM has given an assurance to examine the demand placed by the committee during a meeting with representatives of the committee led by him on February 28 .
The committee had submitted a memorandum to the CM and gave a verbal explanation on why they had put up their demand for a separate district status for Phungyar.
In reply the CM assured to "examine for further necessary action in the interest of the public" .
Phungyar A/C which the committee covers four sub-division of Ukhrul district, Phungyar, Kamjong, Kassom Khullen and Sahamphung.
The memorandum was signed by 205 chiefs and chairmen of the village authorities of over 146 villages across Phungyar constituency.
Wunaosung Keishing said that the demand was brought up considering the sufferings of the people of his constituency and to find a way to overcome them.
The constituency is larger than the areas of Ukhrul and Chingai A/Cs put together.
Ukhrul district HQ is too far away from the constituency.
As a result the district administration cannot cover most parts of the constituency.
According to the 2001 census, the population of the constituency is around 50,000 .
Due to poor communications this part of the district is socially, economically, financially and educationally backward and needs special attention from the government to be at par with the rest of the people of the state, he said.
Health delivery system, road communication and other developmental programmes have not reached the constituency, and Phungyar is totally isolated from the rest of Ukhrul district he went on to say.
In these circumstances, "I believe honourable CM will consider our plea of establishing Phungyar as a district in the interest of the people," he said.
