Imphal, November 29 2009:
Manipur People's Party (MPP), Bharatya Janata Party (BJP), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) have reportedly decided to support Independent candidate, Gandhi alias Jay Dev Sharma in the coming by-election to Yaiskul AC slated for December 19 .
It may be mentioned that Gandhi alias Jaydev Sharma, a senior Congressman, has been tendering his resignation from membership of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) after he was denied Congress ticket for the ensuing by-poll.
The MPCC had given the party ticket to Elangbam Suraj, the eldest son of the late E Kunjakishore.
Meanwhile, the three opposition parties - MPP, BJP and CPI (M) - are yet to find a consensus candidate for the by-poll so far.
The MPP is convening a meeting of the MPP legislature party and party advisors tomorrow.
The meeting will discuss the party's decision over the support of Jaydev Sharma.
At the same time, the BJP will also hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue of supporting a candidate in the coming by-election to Yaiskul AC.
It is worth mentioning that Gandhi has already sought the support of the MPP and BJP, in written, for the coming by-election.
Though the MPP leaders have agreed to extend support to Gandhi, there has been no official declaration of the party on the matter.
The party is expected to come out with a definite decision after the meeting tomorrow.
The MPP, Yaiskul Kendra is also said to have pressurised the higher authority to support Gandhi in the ensuing by-poll.
The meeting is said to dwell on the overall scenario of the Yaiskul by-poll.
The BJP, Yaiskul Mandal has also conveyed its decision to extend support to Gandhi to the party president, Dr H Borbabu .
The BJP is also expected to come out with a clear-cut decision on the matter tomorrow.
Meantime, source from the Yaiskul Kendra Congress Committee said that rift appears within the Kendra Congressmen over the nomination of E Suraj as the Congress candidate in the coming by-poll.
Some Congressmen of Yaiskul are said to have given their allegiance to Gandhi.
Gandhi had resigned from the party alleging that the nomination of party candidate was not fair.
He was one of the three contenders for the party ticket.
