Imphal, November 29 2009:
In connection with the news report and the photographs published to counter the police claim that Chungkham Sanjit was killed in an encounter with police commandos on July 23 at Khwairamband Bazar, an investigation team of the State Police Department has examined the editor and two reporters of news magazine Tehelka.
Acting on the petition filed by Taratombi, mother of late Sanjit, for investigation into the incident, the Gauhati High Court had directed the City Police to register a FIR.
According the City Police started investigating into the case which was subsequently referred to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the State Police.
The special investigation team led by Senior SP of Thoubal District Clay Khongsai recently went to New Delhi to examine the editor of Tehelka news magazine Tarun J Tejpal and two of its reporters namely Teresa Rahman and Soma Choudhury.
According to a reliable source, the newspaper had extended its full co-operation with the SIT in the examination.
However, it did not entertain the request for handing over the published photographs.
After the counsel of the news magazine suggested that examination should be done at New Delhi, the special investigation team had gone to there.
In the progress report of the investigation submitted to the Court, the police said the statements of 23 witnesses and 11 Commando personnel have been recorded so far.
