Imphal, February 17 2014:
Observing that out of the total 22327 sq km geographical area of the State, the valley portion comprises only 400 sq mile and that non-locals have also started buying landed properties in different parts of the valley thereby posing a potential threat to the existence of indigenous people, Federation of Regional Indigenous Societies (FREINDS) has appealed to the people in the valley not to sell landed properties to non-locals anymore.
In a statement, FREINDS pointed out that in accordance to the Land Revenue & Land Reform Act, 1960 (MLR Act), people of the valley are not allowed to buy land in hills but there is no such restriction in the valley and pointed out that some people in the valley are selling their huge land properties to non-locals only in the interest of their well being which should be avoided.
The Federation has also urged the State Government to come up with necessary steps to stop the practice of selling landed property to non-locals considering the security of the indigenous
people.
