Attack on scribe: Dy CM orders to nab suspended IRB man

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who is also in-charge of Home Department, has ordered the officials of Manipur Police to arrest the suspended Havildar of 1st IRB Md Mujibur Rahman, who assaulted senior staff reporter of Imphal Free Press Aribam Chaoba on the night of February 10 near Kangla Northern Gate, and start investigations into the incidents of physical assault and gun attack later at the victim reporter's Thangmeiband residence on the evening of February 15 .
Havildar Mujibur Rahman physically assaulted senior reporter Chaoba near Kangla Northern Gate on the night of February and threatened to kill him if he lodged any complaint.
The accused IRB man was placed under suspension after the incident.
Later few days, some unidentified persons again fired some rounds at the residence of Chaoba, probably a life attempt on him in the aftermath of filing a complaint to the police regarding the assault case.
On the other hand, condemning the gun attack at Chaoba's residence, the members of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) convened a general body meeting and resolved to seek strict action against the erring IRB Havildar through the law court.
After the meeting, the AMWJU members led by President W Shyamjai met Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam at his office chamber today and enquired about the course of action taken against the accused IRB Havildar.
Deputy CM told the AMWJU members that the IRB man has already been placed under suspension and he has instructed the police officials to arrest him and start investigations into the incidents.
He also assured to the AMWJU members that he would render all possible assistances to expedite the investigations and punish the culprit.
More than 30 State security personnel have been punished for involvement in various crimes, Gaikhangam noted.
The AMWJU further said that it would stand by its resolution to fight for justice in law courts if the State authorities do not take up satisfactory action against the culprits.
