Governor's Award (Manipur) for the year 2009 was given to Konjengbam Manglemthoi, d/o K Saratchandra Singh, Konjengbam Leikai, Moirang on Wednesday at a function organized by the managing committee of Rajkumari Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya at Asha-Jina cinema complex, Imphal.
The award includes a certificate with a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and is given to a student of the senior secondary level who is pursuing studies in the Vidyalaya with not less than three years consistent excellence in academic and co-curricular activities.
It was instituted in the year 1998 in order to promote and encourage the students of Rajkumari Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya, Kaotal, Imphal in pursuit of excellence in academic and co-curricular activities.
The Rajkumari Sanatombi Devi Award in the form of a certificate with cash award of Rs 4,000 given in appreciation of outstanding performance in the field of education, arts, drama, sports, social work, physically challenged persons, traffic control, organization of children home, journalism and handicraft were also awarded to ten awardees in the function.
The recipients were Waikhom Nydia Devi for securing the first position in the HSLC examination 2009 conducted by board of secondary education, Manipur; P.Bimola Devi for her devoted service as a teacher; Takhellambam Soniya Devi (cycling); Okram Bidyalaxmi Devi (judo); Brahmacharimayum Lucy Devi (archery); Leimapokpam Joymati Chanu (armwrestling); Haorungbam Bidya Laxmi Devi (wrestling); Sarangthem Priyadashini Devi (physically challenged); Laishram Ibetombi (traffic police) and Langoljam Shamu Singh (Fine Arts teacher of RKSDV) selected for a special cash award for the good performance of 15 students of the Vidyalaya who secured 100 out of 100 in the painting subject in the last AISSC examination 2009 conducted by CBSE.
Speaking as the chief guest, Dr IS Khaidem, former vice chancellor, Manipur university and former chairman, Manipur Public Service Commission said that teachers should be selected very carefully so that good students can be produced.
He also said that the present education system needs an overhaul including introduction of school achievement test (SAT) for promotion of students.
The president of the function E.Sonamani, retired IAS said that education is the power to live a peaceful life, and we have to be physically and mentally aware to be successful persons.
