International Literacy Day observed

As done across the globe, International Literacy Day was observed in the State under the joint aegis of Directorate of Adult Education and State Literacy Mission Authority at GM Hall today.
The function was graced by RD & PR Minister Francis Ngajokpa and MLA Md Fazur Rahim, Chairman of Wakf Board as Chief Guest and President respectively.
Kh Surnolata, Adhyaksha, Zilla Parishad, Thoubal; RS Henary Hiilii, Chairman, ADC, Senapati; G Soihem Haomei, Chairman, ADC, Tamenglong were also present on the occasion as Guests of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Francis Ngajokpa stated that though the literacy rate of Manipur was very low earlier, it has risen today and as such the number of educated persons in the State has increased.
However, the number of students getting enrolled in government schools is still very low as the government employees of the State including the government school teachers are reluctant to send their children to government schools.
Delivering the Presidential speech, MLA Md Fazur Rahim, stated that with advancement in Science and Technology, one should not only be educated but also be computer literate.
To be a well educated person depends on hard work labour one invests.
Today, a number of differently abled persons are well educated.
This is because of their hard work, he observed.
Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, Manipur University (MU) also observed International Literacy Day-2013 on the theme of 'Literacy for the 21st Century' at the department lecture hall today with Prof.Ksh Bimola Devi, Department of Political Science, MU; Dr L Leiren Singh, Head of Department of Education, MU and Dr Khelena Gurumayum, Assistant Professor, Department of Science, MU as resource persons.
