Improvement of Higher Education is a National issue: Dr Kh Ratankumar

A day-long seminar on "New Dimension of Higher Education" jointly organized by Manipur University and Premji University of Bangalore was held at the Court Room of Manipur University, Canchipur, today.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar said that in order to build up and produce great human resources, we need to develop the Higher Education system.
Developing of Higher Education system is the issue of both the state as well as the country.
He further observed that developing higher education system in the 21st century is a big challenge.
The infrastructure of the various universities existing in the country needs to be upgraded for improving higher education system in the state.
During the last 2 years, India has been able to produce more than two million of graduates and post graduates in India, the Minister said.
Delivering the Presidential speech, Prof H Nandakumar Sharma, VC, Manipur University said that no university in India has been able to make itself among top 200 universities of the world.
However, there are some universities in India which is among the 200 to 400 best universities in the world.
As such, by 2015, India needs to establish more than 1000 universities in the country and develop the higher education system in the country.
He noted that lack of new and innovative ideas is one of the reasons for backwardness of higher education system in the country.
At present there are around 1600 vacancies for faculty members in around 40 Central Universities in the country and this has become one of the main hindrance in pursuing higher education and research work in the country, thus hampering in generation of new innovative ideas.
Prof Shankar Dutta of Premji University was also present on the occasion as Guest of Honour.
