Rights of the handicapped people are violating in Manipur.
The clear instance, no stair for rolling wheelchair installed in the government offices even in the Chief Minister's office, said Ng Nongyai, member of the Manipur Human Rights Commission today.
Speaking at the concluding function of the month long observation of Handicapped Welfare Month held at Kuki Inn, Imphal here, Nongyai recalled a ruling of the Supreme Court of India regarding the installation of stair for wheelchair so as to make easy to enter to offices by handicapped people.
Supreme Court has directed to install the stair rolling wheelchair including at chief minister's bungalow, legislative Assembly etc.
But the same is not seen any of the offices so far.
This caused inconveniences to the handicapped people in visiting the said places, he observed.
In the state, department dealing with the welfare of the people will disabilities is also not functioning well as the office is facing manpower shortage.
However, he assured of extending all kinds of assistances that can be provided by the rights commission.
Director of social welfare, S Sharatkumar Sharma who presided over the function in which retired judge and former member of MHRC, Lisham Rabindra, former president of Manipur Working Journalists' Union, AK Sanaton and prof, IS Kangjam of MU Hindi Department attended as guests of honour of the function.
Before the concluding function of the observation month, a seminar on role of the media and writers in the participation of handicapped people in general functions and activity was also held.
Noted writer, Manoubi MM, Imphal correspondent of Time of India, K Sarojkumar and lecturer of DM College of Arts Dr Lalchenba Meetei were the resource persons of the seminar.
The seminar which was moderated by IS Kangjam drafted resolutions to expose the plight of handicapped people to the media and focus on the matters which would encourage them, use of words which would encourage them in the write up of the writers etc.
