State remembers Gandhi on Martyr's Day

As in other parts of the country, the state government also observed the Martyr's Day to commemorate the 75th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, at Gandhi Memorial (GM) Hall here on Monday.
The commemorative func tion began with singing of National Anthem, followed by wreath-laying at Mahatma Gandhi's statue by Governor La Ganesan, who attended as chief guest of the event.
He was joined by CM Biren, ministers and officers of different government departments.
Siren was sounded for one minute, followed a two- min ute silence and sounding of another minute-long siren, as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor La Ganesan said that present generation needs to learn and imbibe the roles played by Mahatma Gandhi for the sake of the country.
We must never forget Mahatma Gandhi's huge contribution in the freedom struggle of India, he added.
It may be mentioned here that Martyrs' Day is observed to mark the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who successfully led the country to freedom from the British Empire.
It is observed on Thursday to commemorate 75th Death Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated on the same day in 1948.Born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, he was and is still widely regarded as 'Bapu', or as the 'Father of the Nation' in India.
On this day, Indians from all around the world come together to celebrate the legacy of a great hero and acknowledge the futile destruction caused by violent extremism.
