Imphal, September 21 2014:
"If state forces had not been deployed in Ukhrul district, further tense situation would have prevailed there", said Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam while speaking during the flag off of a team of youth congress at Congress Bhavan here today.
A team of 65 members of Manipur State Youth Congress left Imphal today to participate in the Rally being organized by All India Youth Congress Committee on September 25 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to propagate the non-fulfillment of pre-poll promises of the BJP government at the centre.
Another 20 youth congress members will leave for Delhi on September 22 .
Addressing the gathering, Gaikhangam, who is also the Home Minister of the state, pointed out that withdrawal of state forces from Ukhrul headquarters was done after consultation with the Centre in view of the impending damage likely to be faced due to ban of National Projects and blockade of highways by the UNC.
Deployment of forces in Ukhrul was to protect lives and properties of the people, explained the Home Minister while asking those who demanded removal of the same whether the turmoil in the district has been resolved.
The Deputy Chief Minister, while saying that the government was acting on its responsibilities, exuded that state forces may also be reinstated if the need arises.
