Imphal, September 21 2014:
Condemning the State Government's negligence in building good libraries and maintaining the existing ones, president of the Library and Information Science Students' Association (LISSAM) Manipur, W Holland Monsang has urged the State Government to build good libraries and maintain the existing ones.
Holland Monsang made the statement during the first annual day celebration of LISSAM which was held at Tribal Research Institute, Chingmeirong today.
He lamented that after the recruitment of librarians and helpers for Government libraries in the State in 1986, no other recruitment has been conducted till date.
It is the Government's lackadaisical attitude which has been stopping the development and enhancement of the libraries in schools and colleges of Manipur, he added.
He further said that an educational institute without a good library is like having a meal without salt in it.
Likewise, a library acts as the backbone of its institute.
Teachers must also encourage their students to use library and make them aware of the importance of libraries, he asserted.
"The teachers have a bad habit of taking new books to their homes.
I understand that teachers are also required to work on their syllabus and update their knowledge.
However, students must also get the same benefits from the libraries", he stated.
President of All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur, Muan Tombing and convenor of Joint Students' Co-ordinating Committee, Manipur, Th Premananda shared the dais along with other dignitaries during the function.
The function culminated with a public discussion programme on 'Present Condition of Academic Libraries of Manipur' .
