World Heritage Week commences

Imphal, November 19 2014:
A seven-day World Heritage Week being organized by State Archaeology, Department of Art & Culture began today at Kangla Hall with Th Tombi Singh, Advisor of Art & Culture; Dr K Sobita, Director of Art & Culture and Dr O Kumar Singh, former Superintendent of Archaeology attending as chief guest, president and guest of honor respectively.
Addressing the gathering, Dr O Kumar stated that the World Heritage Week has been observed under the aegis of UNESCO since 1975 with the objective to protect and preserve precious heritage sites situated in different parts of the world, while informing that there are around 1000 heritage sites in the world.
Saying that heritage is classified into two parts namely Cultural Heritage and Natural Heritage, he asserted that future generation should preserve heritage sites as valuable knowledge and ideas could be obtained from it apart from helping people to trace history.
As part of the programme, an essay writing competition on the topic 'Relevance of Heritage Sites & Monuments in the Present Society of Manipur' for students of Class IX and X was organized.
