Cyber crimes on the rise ; Complaints from victims minimal

As the globe revolves round the advanced computer science, the number of criminals who commit cyber crime is increasing and Manipur is not lagging behind.
Though a number of persons in Manipur had become victims of the burgeoning cyber crimes the number of complaints lodged is just the tip of the iceberg.
This was exclusively disclosed to Hueiyen Lanpao by the Manipur Police Telecom Organisation senior superintendent H Kulachandra on Friday.
He was talking to this paper on the sidelines of the One Day Workshop on Cyber Security Awareness organised joinly by hte NIFLIT and the DC Imphal east on Friday at the Sericulture directorate, Sangaipat.
Most of the police officers were trained in Information Technology with a special reference to fighting cyber crime.
However due to shortage of staff strength most of these trained officers are posted at remote places where there is no cyber facility.
He underlined the need to plug it to fight the serious cyber crime.
He further disclosed that a cyber cell was opened in Imphal West district in 2013 and in Imphal east in 2014.An economic offence wing was also opened in 2008.Altogether 69 police officers were trained in IT.
However most of them were posted at remote areas where there is no use for their knowledge.
There was a complaint concerning cyber crime in 2013 followed by five including one economic offence in 2014.Two cases had been solved while others are pending.
Imphal East SP Kamei Angam Romanus, senior director DEITY ASA Krishanan, STD & SIO, NIC Manipur KH Rajen, Director NIELIT TH Prameswor were the chief guest, guests of honours and president of the function respectively.
It is felt in many circles that there is an urgent need to fight the increasing cyber crime in Manipur since there are internet and mobile facilities everywhere.
Besides social media are also mostly misused.
Ther had been reports of harassing girls and housewives with pornographic film clippings.
There is also a growing fear that cyber facilities may be misused for much serious and wider campaigns.
