Part-time lecturers to cease work

Decrying alleged indifferent attitude of the government towards the demand for hiking the minimum basic pay of 346 Part-time lecturers working in various government higher secondary schools, All Manipur Government Higher Secondary Part-time Lecturers' Association has decided to go ahead with indefinite cease work strike from tomorrow.
Announcing this at a press conference at Manipur Press Club here today, President of the Association Md Zahur pointed out that 346 Part-time lecturers have been appointed for teaching in various higher secondary schools under the government of Manipur in between 1992 and 1998 in consideration of various factors including upgradation of 20 high schools to higher secondary schools and the restriction on government appointments.
At the time of joining the service, the part-time lecturers were paid Rs 1000 as basic pay.
In 1998, the amount was increased to Rs 2000 and to Rs 4,500 in 2004 .
Since then, there has been no increase although the price of essential commodities has sky-rocketed, Md Zahur observed.
On the contrary, the pay scale of the contract teachers who have been appointed recently started from Rs 8000 while the pay scale of the teachers in some high schools of Heirok which have been upgraded to higher secondary schools s well as in the hills started from Rs 13,700 .
Moreover, the service of 120 part-time lecturers in colleges who have joined the service around the same time have been already regularized, Md Zahur lamented.
