Imphal, November 02 2011:
Attended by a number of social workers, the Development and Protection Organisation (DPO), Keirao Makting GP Area organised an awareness programme on the political scenario in Keirao Assembly Constituency ahead of the ensuing polls.
The awareness programme at Urup Mayai Leikai Junior High School campus was held on November 1 on the theme 'The Role of Youth in Politics Specially at Keirao AC' .
Calling upon the electors to cast their votes with maturity and minute assessment regarding sincerity and commitment of the candidates, former AMSU vice president K Raj Singh exhorted youths of the assembly segment to take active and positive part in ensuring that the forthcoming democratic exercise is not reduced to a mere formality.
Pointing out that people belonging to the Meitei, Muslim and tribal communities are settled at various locations under Keirao AC, he asserted that electing the right person would guarantee a meaningful democracy.
Cautioning the voters particularly the youths to remain vigilant against corrupt elements/candidates who would try to buy votes, he also suggested that candidate committed to solving various important issues, including AFSPA, should be favoured.
Secretary of the programme host Md Bizu expressed strong resentment that scholarship to minority students and loans under schemes of the MOBC department had not be released till date inspite of repeated assurances.
Setting a 15 days deadline to release the pending scholarship and loan, Bizu said failure to honour the demand will lead to boycott of all concerned.
Speaking at the occasion, social worker Koreng Maring grimly noted that inspite of successive representatives from Keirao AC provided ministerial berths there is hardly any sign of development in the constituency.
Only a few individual or family close to the elected representatives could be counted as having some benefit, he claimed and added that this time around there would be about seven candidates contesting from Keirao AC.
Many local leaders, including functionaries of local bodies, and social workers also addressed the gathering.
