Ukhrul, October 17 2012:
A student was brutally assaulted reportedly by jawans of Assam Rifles recently at State Bank of India (SBI) complex, Somsai and the incident has drawn serious condemnation from student community in Ukhrul district.
On October 15 at about 1pm, five AR personnel led by RP Swapan Jamatia physically assaulted one Leishang Nakhedei (21), son of N Aring without any rhyme or reason.
The victim boy, as per the reports submitted to the office of Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), was dragged out from the office of SBI located inside the DIG 10 Sector of Assam Rifles.
Leishang Nakhedei is a student of fashion designing in Hyderabad and currently on vacation here.
He is a resident of Viewland in Ukhrul.
The boy sustained serious injury of severe bruise on his face and was administered medical treatment at the district hospital.
Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong has condemned the incident.
''Instead of protecting the civilians, AR assaulted innocent student, and this act deserves utmost condemnation,'' said TKS President Yangmi Khapai.
He asserted that the SBI is for the services of the public and if the present location is not congenial to the civilians, it needs to be relocated out of the AR premises.
"If at all the student had committed any offence, the trained soldiers should reason him instead of resorting to violent acts," the TKS President stated.
According to a source, the boy had allegedly walked past the AR check point without going through security entrance installed at the gate near the SBI office.
The victim, it was informed, was not aware of the mandatory checking.
The student body demanded that the AR culprits should be given befitting punishment by relevant authorities.
