Imphal, October 17 2012:
Frauds masquerading as CBI, Income Tax and army intelligence sleuths have unleashed a reign of terror among traders in Imphal threatening them that warrants were being issued against them for one reason or the other.
The frauds usually ask the traders that the matter could be settled if certain amount is deposited to their bank account.
Some businessmen even succumbed to the perpetual threat by depositing certain amount to these frauds' account , said social worker Amrik Singh Pahwa adding that the matter has been brought to the notice of the police.
Superintendent of Police (Imphal West) K Jayenta Singh, on being contacted, said that investigation has been started to nab the culprits.
"We have got the account number of the fraud, who reportedly made the threatening calls to the business community," said the senior police officer today evening.
He did not rule out the possibility of the involvement of others in abetting the fraud to carry out the practice after informing the financial positions of some traders.
"I am receiving lot of reports from many fields that some frauds are calling up the people, specially the business community in the State and others and threatening them that they are speaking from CBI or Income Tax Department or Army intelligence etc from outside Manipur to make them feel that warrants are being issued against them for one reason or the other," Pahwa said in a statement.
"These frauds are seem to be staying earlier in Manipur and they know much about the people of Manipur.
I had already passed the bank account number to the SP Imphal West for doing the needful," he said while urging the people to remain alert.
On a number of earlier occasions frauds under different impersonations have duped the gullible public to tune of lakhs of rupees leading to huge outcry.
