In an apparent case of food poisoning, altogether 70 people, including Chairman of Hill Area Committee Chaltonlien Amo, nine children and 12 women have been hospitalized after a feast at Ghari Makha Leikai in Imphal West district.
The incident happened five days back.
All the 70 people started experiencing loose motions and vomiting after partaking in a large feast organized at Nungshi Thoiraba Church complex.
Most of them are from Churachandpur district, Chingarel in Imphal East, Keinou in Bishnupur and Ghari.
According to M Ningthem, a pastor, who has been treated at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal, a meeting of representatives of Manipur Pastoral Development Fellowship was held at the church before the feast.
Later in the evening they started experiencing lose motions, vomiting, dizziness and backache after which they were rushed to JNIMS, Churachandpur District Hospital and Bishnupur District Hospital for treatment.
Some of them were discharged after receiving medical treatment for two-three days but many of them, including Chaltolien Amo and his six escort personnel are still undergoing treatment at hospitals.
Ningthem said he believed that the fish bought from a fishmonger at Kwakeithel for the meal were not fresh ones.
He added that his pet dog too has fallen sick after he gave it some fried fish eggs after the feast.
